Amelia of ancient origins and was the first city within in the current territory of Umbria. The town is located near the border with Lazio and ad a convenient distance from Rome (104 km). Lying at the southern end of the Apennines mountain chain the landscape around Amelia is mostly hilly. A few km from Amelia, in the northwestern part of the city at the foot of the hill on which the old town stands, there is the basin of the Rio Grande, also known by the name of Old Lake. It is actually a reservoir, formed by the damming of the river with the Big Dam Bridge, and was used in the past to feed the mills downstream. Terni is 26 km away, Todi 40 km, Orvieto 43 km and Lake Bolsena 55 km.
